Community Description:
Huron County consists of nine municipalities, Goderich, Bluewater, North Huron, Central Huron, Huron East, South Huron, Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh, Morris-Turnberry, Howick . The County Seat Goderich founded in 1827, is central to the County and has earned it’s reputation as “Canada’s Prettiest Town”, attributed to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during a trip to Goderich. Huron County enjoys a colourful military history from both the 19th and 20th centuries. The monument is located on the grounds of the Huron County Museum and can be overlooked from the Military Gallery within the Museum. The site was chosen because of the strong educational link with students who visit the Museum on field trips as a way to educate and to promote Remembrance. The accompanying cairn was constructed of reclaimed foundation stone from the former historic Victoria Street United Church built in 1878 but destroyed by an F3 tornado which devastated a large part of the Goderich downtown core in 2011. The cairn also houses a 6″X3″ rectangular piece of marble repatriated from the original Kandahar Cenotaph located at Kandahar Air Field, Kandahar Afghanistan which was dismantled upon Canadian troop withdrawal in 2014. Pieces of the stone were also presented to the four Memorial Cross Families who were present at the Dedication Ceremony by the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario
