Community Description:

Fort McMurray was born in 1964 when Great Canadian Oil Sands (now Suncor Energy Inc.) was given permission to start construction on a plant to separate the bitumen from the oil sands. The town grew from 2,614 in 1966, to 10,000 by the mid-1970s. Then on April 1, 1995, Fort McMurray amalgamated with Improvement District No. 143, encompassing the territory of five First Nations, to create the Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Fort McMurray is the largest community within the Municipality. “Fort Mac” as it has become known is a clean, modern city and remains the epicentre of Canada’s oil production. Subsequently, the community’s growth and prosperity is tied to the rise and fall of oil prices. The population of 80,000+ people have come from every part of Canada, various parts of the world and has always included veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) from every major war and conflict.
