Community Description:
Hamilton is a busy city located next to the picturesque Niagara Escarpment and on Lake Ontario between Toronto and Buffalo, New York. It first became a city in 1846 and later expanded its borders, on January 1, 2001, when it amalgamated with five neighbouring municipalities: Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough, Glanbrook, and Stoney Creek. The current population is estimated at 700,000 people.
Hamilton has long been known as the Steel Capital of Canada and it offers plenty to see and do for its residents, including an International Port Authority and Airport and 15 National Historic Sites. The City has very strong ties with the military. The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry regiment has been present in every Canadian military campaign in history and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada are responsible for supplying the Army with trained light infantry reservist. The Navy has also depended upon Hamilton to provide trained reservist sailors ever since 1923. Today this division is known as HMSC Star and is 200 members strong. While the Air Force used the Hamilton airport for air force training, during WWII. Today, Hamilton is home to some significant military memorabilia from all three forces including Canada’s most experienced and honoured warship, the HMCS Haida and an operational Avro Lancaster airplane, considered to be the most famous Allied bomber of the Second World War. The new LAV III Monument serves to pay special tribute to the local Fallen from the Afghanistan mission, Private Mark Anthony Graham, Sergeant Shawn Allen Eades, Major Raymond Ruckpaul and Corporal Nathan Cirillo.
